The Marketing Department is a standout program in the NJCU School of Business. The NJCU Marketing Department is aligned with the career competencies employers value most in new hires, offering a comprehensive program focused on long-term student success.
Completion of the Marketing major prepares students for careers in marketing and related fields such as public relations, integrated marketing communication, market research, marketing data analytics, digital marketing, advertising, and more. Continued study may include a master’s and/or doctoral degree in business, marketing analytics, strategic communication, public relations, public administration, or law.
Students who major in Marketing select at least one area of concentration: Digital Marketing, Marketing Analytics, or Public Relations. Non-Marketing majors can minor in these areas of study.
Recent innovations implemented by the NJCU Marketing Department include: an upgraded core curriculum that integrates the construction of high-quality professional portfolios and prepares students to earn certifications from leading external organizations such as Google and the Universal Accreditation Board.
Outside of the classroom, the NJCU Marketing Department helps students develop their interpersonal skills and professional competencies. This includes an in-house internship placement program for hands-on job experience and invitations to numerous on-campus and on-location Marketing events where students can build their professional network. The Department’s Marketing Mentorship Program provides personalized career and academic guidance to students.
Marketing majors and non-majors can gain additional career and leadership experience in Marketing and related fields through membership in the NJCU Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and the NJCU Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA).

Marketing Students Join Battle of the Brains
Two NJCU Marketing students—Katie Borjas and Jessica Rivera—were among a team of five high-achieving NJCU students who participated in the 2nd annual HSI Battle of the Brains competition in Austin, Texas on March 8, 2022.
Borjas and Rivera’s teammates included Accounting/Global Business double major Gercy Sorto, as well as Computer Science majors Topu Saha and Eduardo Vidals.
NJCU’s 2022 HSI Battle of the Brains team was sponsored by NJCU’s Guarini Institute, and they were accompanied to the event by Dr. Jorge Medina (Assistant Professor, Economics), who served as the team’s faculty adviser.
The HSI Battle of the Brains competition is an integrative competition that welcomes Hispanic students from various Hispanic serving institutions to come compete in finding solutions to complex, real-world issues. During the competition, students developed a solution that included analytical, business, and technology components that they presented to judges and sponsors.
“The Battle of the Brains competition exposed us to a unique academic and networking experience that challenged our critical thinking and encouraged us to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” said Rivera. “It was such an unforgettable week.”
Teams engaged in a 24-hour “hackaton” to develop a solution based on the business challenge presented. Solutions were expected to include social engagement tools, platforms, strategies, website and mobile app considerations, a marketing plan with collateral, a go-to-market strategy for technology solutions, and more. The teams were challenged to incorporate design, policy, business, and STEM components into their business solution.
“I was honored to represent NJCU at HSI Battle of the Brains, and always grateful for the opportunities to grow, and learn from my peers through new experiences at NJCU,” said Borjas. “I enjoyed the challenge and working together with my teammates.”
Marketing Students Stack Up Credentials
In addition to earning their degrees, NJCU Marketing majors are prepared in Marketing classes to earn external credentials. Passing external certification examinations earn Marketing students “stackable credentials” that demonstrate their skills and abilities to employers. When stacked on top of their degree on resumes, Linked In profiles and portfolios, NJCU Marketing students get noticed.
In fall 2021, Allison Vaccaro, a 2021 graduate of the NJCU School of Business, became the 11th NJCU Marketing major to pass the challenging National Certificate in Principles of Public Relations Examination through the Universal Accreditation Board (UAB). The Certificate in Principles of Public Relations is an entry-level certificate designed to demonstrate a fundamental level of knowledge for graduates entering public relations, marketing and related professions.

This unique leadership program brings together high-performing college students with Goldman Sachs and partner company business leaders to develop and refine leadership, career readiness, analytical, teamwork, and presentation skills. To earn a spot in the program, the students underwent a rigorous application and interview process in the Fall. Josh Iannuzzi (Director of SoB Career Services) coordinates this program, with Prof. Gita Sharma (Management Dept) serving as the faculty advisor.
Also in the Fall, nearly 90% of Dr. Ulu’s Social Media Class passed two Hootsuite Certifications - Hootsuite Platform Certificate (96% of the class) and Hootsuite-Social Marketing Certificate (85% of the class).
More than 50 students in Principles of Marketing classes taught by Professors Williams, Barth, Polley and Dr. Lee earned the Google Analytics Certificate for Beginners.
